So, I think it depends whether you're trying to get somewhere, or whether you're there to enjoy the drive. Storage space was a bit tricky - we ended up using a boot rack for some extra space - and the lack of cruise control was annoying on the motorway segments, but other than that it was perfect! The MX-5 has a relatively small engine, so fuel costs weren't too bad. There were lots of twisty roads and beautiful weather, so a nimble, convertible roadster was perfect. I think this would apply to pretty much any car of that sort of size and type though - a BMW 3 (or even 5) series diesel would probably be just as good, it's just that this is the only big car I've owned.įor a more interesting road trip (like the one I did a few years ago through the Alps), my old MX-5 was wonderful.
